Republic comes from the Latin res publica which literally means "public thing" and designates the general interest then the government, politics and finally the State.

It is a type of organization of a country in which power is exercised by representatives of the population, generally elected, and where the head of state is not hereditary and is not the only one to hold power. In this sense “republic” is opposed to “monarchy”, but is not always synonymous with democracy.

The republic is, in 2021, the most widespread form of political regime in the world: out of 197 countries, 152 are officially republics.
